When is the best time to cruise the Nile? A month-by-month guide
Upper Egypt is sailable all year, but October to April offers the most comfortable temperatures. Here is what to expect, season by season.
The short answer: October to April is the most comfortable window to cruise the Nile in Upper Egypt — daytime temperatures between 22°C and 30°C, cool nights, almost no rain. May to September is sailable too, but daytime temperatures often exceed 38°C and temple visits become demanding.
October to November — the soft return of light
Air around 28–32°C, water still warm, evenings mild. The river has fewer boats than in winter; light is golden and long. An excellent window for first-time visitors.
December to February — high season, cool and luminous
Days 22–25°C, nights down to 8–10°C. The most popular season: bright skies, dry air, perfect for temples. Bring a sweater for sunrise on deck. Christmas and New Year are often booked 6–9 months ahead.
March to April — colour and warmth
Days 28–32°C, fields in flower, the Nile at its most photogenic. A favourite of returning travellers. The khamsin (a hot southerly wind) can blow occasionally in late March or April.
May to September — hot, quiet, contemplative
35–42°C in the shade. Temples are visited at dawn and dusk; the afternoons are spent on deck, in shade, with cold drinks. Fewer travellers, slower pace — a real option for heat-lovers and for private charters.
Practical tips
- Book 4–9 months ahead for December and Easter.
- A cotton scarf is invaluable — for sun, dust and modesty at sites.
- Pack layers: cool dawns, warm midday, cool nights.
- All seasons: respectful clothing covering shoulders and knees at temples and in villages.
